Healing Hearts Across
Borders volunteers travel to
Tijuana, Mexico
four times per year to set up a free clinic at two different locations,
including the makeshift village at the Tijuana
garbage dump. We
have a full-service mobile laboratory where we can do basic blood, urine, and
stool tests, including diabetes screening and pregnancy tests. In addition to providing free medical and dental care, we
distribute vitamins, food, clothing, toys, and hygiene products to the patients
who visit our sites. We see 600 to 700 patients on each weekend trip.
In the course of our work in
Tijuana
, HHAB doctors have identified several children in need of surgeries that are
not available to them in Mexico. In conjunction with another non-profit organization, Healing the Children,
HHAB has already brought two children to
Los Angeles for surgeries to correct congenital heart defects. Several more children
in need of life-changing operations are on a waiting list to come to the United States
for their surgeries.
With the growth of our team and the generosity of our sponsors, we hope to step
up our efforts to become a more stable entity within these communities and
expand our targeted areas to other sectors that desperately need care. We
are working to form relationships with local authorities and health care
providers in Tijuana
so that we might have locations to which we can refer patients for more
specialized treatment or for management of chronic disease.
